Addressing Legal and Ethical Challenges in Social Media Research
The course delves into the legal and ethical dimensions of conducting research with social media data, using a specific research project as a case example. Participants will explore the key legal frameworks of intellectual property and data protection laws. Issues such as user consent, privacy, and copyright will be critically examined and discussed. Furthermore, the course will address the ethical aspects of social media research, such as the responsible and fair use of content available on social media platforms. The course tries to answer the following questions, among others:
- How does one approach the use of social media for research purposes?
- What needs to be considered during research process (e.g. data access and collection, storage etc.)
- When and why do copyright and data protection laws apply to social media data?
- What are the requirements for the lawful use of social media data?
- What are the main ethical issues to be considered when using social media data for research?
- How can ethical use of social media data be implemented?

The course is part of the Data Stewardship Program, but is also open to researchers from the University of Basel and to data stewards from other Swiss universities. If the course is fully booked, the data stewards of the University of Basel have priority.
