What is "personal data"?

Personal data is data, information or statements referring to a specific person or a person identifiable by means of the information. Examples for personal data are: name, date of birth, (e-mail) address, telephone/mobile, AHV number, matriculation number, bank details, gender, photography, characteristics that characterise a person (e.g. only woman in the team), genetic data, license plates, etc. The term is defined differently in the legal texts.

  1. personal data (data): all information relating to an identified or identifiable person;

GDPR, Art. 4

  1. ‘personal data’ means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (‘data subject’); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person;
