Data Stewardship Programme

Exploring the legal landscape of research data management

From intellectual property rights to copyright and licenses

The workshop provides an introduction to intellectual property rights and other related legal aspects relevant to research data management. In particular it addresses the application of copyright to research data, software licensing (with a focus on Free and Open Source Software licenses), and the use of Creative Commons licenses and tries to answer the following key questions:

  • When does copyright protection apply to research data?
  • Can research data also be patented?
  • How can data be reused?
  • How can research data be released under an open license?
  • What are open (Creative Commons) licenses?
  • What are FOSS (Free and Open Software Licenses) and how can they be used?

Data protection law is not covered in this workshop, since we provided extra workshop on this topic. The course will mix theoretical inputs with discussions of concrete cases and questions.

Trainers: Suzanna Marazza and Anna Picco-Schwendener (Competence Center in Digital Law)

Workshop language: English

The course is a repetition of the course from the spring semester 2022.

Data Stewards from the universities of Bern and Zurich are invited too. This is a unique opportunity to meet and connect with Data Stewards from other universities. Registrations will be considered on a first come, first served basis.

As places are limited, data stewards and other members of the RDM network of the University of Basel have priority. They will be invited by email. Other people who are interested in taking part in the course are asked to contact the coordinators of the Data Stewardship Programme.

If you already have questions related to intellectual property rights and research data management that should be addressed during the course, please send them to us by May 2 via email. We will then forward them to the trainers in a bundle.
